Harel Insurance Investments and Financial Services was founded in 1935 by Ernst and Margot Hamburger. The company is headquartered at "Harel House" in the Diamond Exchange District of Ramat Gan. It is publicly traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange under the ticker HARL. Harel employs thousands of workers in Israel and operates as a major insurance and financial group offering health, life, and general insurance, alongside pension and provident fund management. A notable recent event was Harel's attempt to acquire the credit card company Isracard, a deal that was blocked by the Israel Competition Authority in early 2024.

Harel focuses on providing insurance and long-term savings products to the Israeli market, holding the largest market share in Israel for health insurance. Although not a traditional software vendor, Harel operates one of the largest IT and technology divisions in the Israeli financial sector. This division develops customer-facing applications, claims automation systems, and big data platforms used for risk assessment and actuarial analysis.

Harel competes directly with other major Israeli insurance and financial groups, including Phoenix, Migdal, Clal, and Menora Mivtachim. It acts as one of Israel's largest institutional investors, managing hundreds of billions of shekels in assets. Over the years, Harel has made several acquisitions to expand its footprint, including the 2021 acquisition of Shirbit Insurance, which was subsequently merged into the group's operations.

The entirety of the company's core operations, including executive management, the IT division, customer service, and actuarial departments, is located in Israel. The primary hub is in Ramat Gan. Harel regularly recruits not only finance and insurance professionals but also software developers, systems analysts, cybersecurity experts, and data professionals for its internal technological arrays.
