Quantum Machines

Quantum Machines was founded in 2018 by Dr. Itamar Sivan, Dr. Yonatan Cohen, and Dr. Nissim Ofek, three physicists who met at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Headquartered in Tel Aviv, the company operates privately and has raised over $100M to date, including a $50M Series B in September 2021. In 2022, the company completed its first acquisition, purchasing the Danish quantum technology firm QDevil.

Quantum Machines does not build quantum processors (qubits). Instead, it focuses entirely on the control and orchestration layer that sits between classical computers and quantum hardware. The system utilizes FPGAs to generate precise electromagnetic pulses and measure qubit states with ultra-low latency. Customers consist of academic research labs, national laboratories, and commercial enterprises building full-stack quantum computers.

The company's flagship hardware line is the OPX (and OPX+) series, which are rack-mounted quantum control systems (QCS) providing multi-channel pulse generation and measurement. On the software side, Quantum Machines developed QUA, a pulse-level programming language that allows physicists to write complex quantum algorithms and compile them directly into hardware instructions. Through the QDevil acquisition, the company also offers auxiliary electronics and cryogenic filters used inside dilution refrigerators.

In the quantum control layer, the company competes primarily with established test-and-measurement companies that have built specific quantum divisions, such as Zurich Instruments (now part of Rohde & Schwarz) and Keysight Technologies. The platform is intentionally hardware-agnostic, interfacing with multiple qubit modalities including superconducting, trapped ion, and neutral atom architectures.

The company's Tel Aviv headquarters houses the bulk of its R&D. The engineering organization requires highly specific talent profiles, extensively recruiting PhD physicists, FPGA engineers, and embedded developers in Israel. In a major local milestone, Quantum Machines was selected in 2022 by the Israel Innovation Authority to establish and manage the Israeli National Quantum Computing Center, working alongside Elbit Systems and other partners.
