Imply

Imply is a private company that builds a real-time analytics database and application platform on top of Apache Druid, the open-source OLAP data store. Imply was co-founded by Fangjin Yang, Gian Merlino, and Vadim Ogievetsky — three engineers who were among the original creators of Apache Druid — along with Yang Peisong. The company is headquartered in Burlingame, California.

Imply's primary product is a managed analytics platform built around Apache Druid, designed for high-concurrency, sub-second queries on large volumes of event and time-series data. The target buyers are engineering and data teams at companies that need to embed real-time analytics directly into customer-facing applications or internal operational dashboards — use cases where latency and query concurrency requirements exceed what general-purpose data warehouses like Snowflake or BigQuery are designed to serve. The platform is sold in both a self-managed (open-source Druid plus enterprise extensions) and a fully managed cloud form.

Imply Polaris is the company's fully managed, cloud-native database-as-a-service offering built on Druid. It targets teams that want the performance characteristics of Druid without the operational overhead of running the cluster themselves. Imply also offers an enterprise distribution of Apache Druid with additional tooling, the Imply Data Cuber visualization layer for slice-and-dice exploration, and Pivot, a self-serve analytics UI. The company has been a leading commercial contributor to the Apache Druid open-source project.

Imply competes in the real-time OLAP and embedded analytics segment against ClickHouse (and its commercial cloud, ClickHouse Cloud), Rockset (acquired by OpenAI in 2024), StarRocks, and to a degree against cloud data warehouses like Snowflake and BigQuery when those are used for lower-latency workloads. Imply's differentiation is deep Apache Druid expertise and the managed Polaris service for streaming ingestion at scale.
