As a Software Engineer at Applied Materials, you’ll dive deep into ground-breaking technologies—like machine learning and AI—to craft novel software solutions that solve our customers’ high-value problems. Our Software Engineers are responsible for designing, prototyping, developing, and debugging software solutions for semiconductor equipment components and devices to ensure quality and functionality. You'll develop software documentation and test procedures, troubleshoot software problems, and communicate with internal customers to understand project requirements. As part of our team, you'll contribute your expertise in intricate systems, deciphering code, and anticipating software behaviors to ensure Applied remains the leader in the semiconductor and display sectors.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Architect to join our dynamic team. As a Senior Software Architect, you will own the architecture of large-scale, data-dense frontend systems, designing solutions that align with our organization's strategic goals. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, algorithm developers, engineers, and product managers, to deliver a frontend architecture that scales across teams and meets the needs of our clients.
What's in it for you?
The responsibility to design a platform used across teams, drive its adoption, and mentor engineers along the way.
Be a key player in the architecture of one of the most data-dense, real-time systems we build, employing state-of-the-art technology.
Opportunities for professional development and career advancement.
Work on cutting-edge rendering, real-time, and visualization technologies.
A collaborative and inclusive work environment where your architectural decisions are valued.
Our Group — Responsible for the two leading Sophisticated Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM).
Build and maintain the costumer software that autonomously controls and operates a state-of-the-art, nano-resolution Scanning Electron Microscope system.
Composed of strong individuals, empowered, service-minded SW engineers.
Driven from business value, enable & partner with product teams.
Own end-to-end frontend architecture for one or more SEM domains — client applications, shared UI infrastructure, rendering, and real-time data flows.
Design and evolve large, complex frontend architectures built on React, TypeScript, and Redux, with deep expertise in rendering behavior and performance characteristics at scale.
Design a platform or framework from scratch and drive its adoption across teams you do not manage.
Architect and operate a micro-frontend ecosystem using Module Federation — defining boundaries, managing shared dependencies and versioning, and enabling independent deployment.
Own application state management strategy at scale across a distributed frontend.
Design and optimize data-dense, continuously updating UIs — canvas/WebGL or image rendering, large grids, and visualization — backed by real-time transports (WebSocket/SSE).
Understand and influence the full data flow, from backend services through real-time transports to rendering, making architectural decisions that hold up across the entire stack, not just on the client.
Collaborate closely with backend and algorithm teams on API design, data contracts, and performance trade-offs that affect both ends of the system.
Bring enough backend/system-design fluency to evaluate where logic and state should live, spot cross-stack bottlenecks, and challenge or validate architectural decisions outside the frontend when needed.
Lead frontend performance engineering: profiling, measurement, performance budgets, and concrete optimization work.
Make architectural decisions that account for real constraints — domain model, team topology, release cadence, and legacy footprint.
Establish architectural governance and guardrails (design reviews, standards, reference patterns) that keep frontend quality consistent, including for AI-assisted development.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise, across both frontend and backend touchpoints.
Mentor engineers and architects; grow a frontend architecture community of practice — and be ready to speak credibly to backend architecture and distributed system trade-offs in technical interviews and design reviews, even though day-to-day ownership is frontend-focused.
What You Will Need
10+ years in software engineering, with 5+ years in architecture roles for web clients.
Deep expertise with React, Angular or VueJS, TypeScript, State-Management libs including rendering behavior and performance characteristics at scale.
Solid working knowledge of backend architecture and system design (APIs, services, data modeling, distributed systems) —you should be able to design, debug, and reason about it credibly.
Hands-on production experience with micro-frontends and Module Federation.
A track record of designing a platform or framework from scratch and driving its adoption across teams you did not manage.
Experience with data-dense, canvas/WebGL visualization — and with real-time transports in the browser.
Strong frontend performance engineering: profiling, measurement, budgets, and concrete optimization.
The ability to design around real constraints — domain model, team topology, release cadence, legacy footprint.
Who we are?
