Western Digital

Western Digital was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in San Jose, California. The company is publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker WDC. It designs and manufactures hard disk drives (HDD) and solid-state drives (SSD), sold under the WD and SanDisk brands.

Western Digital operates across two primary business segments: HDD and Flash. Its HDD products serve consumer, NAS, surveillance, and enterprise data center use cases. Its Flash products, built around the SanDisk brand, address consumer storage, professional media, and enterprise SSD markets. The company sells to hyperscale cloud providers, PC manufacturers, and end consumers. In 2016, Western Digital acquired SanDisk for approximately $19 billion, establishing a major position in the NAND Flash memory market.

Under the WD brand, the company sells a tiered HDD lineup — WD Blue (general consumer), WD Red (NAS/SMB), WD Purple (surveillance), and WD Gold (enterprise) — as well as consumer and enterprise SSDs. The SanDisk brand covers flash memory cards, portable drives, and SSDs for consumers and creative professionals. The HGST brand (acquired from Hitachi in 2012) has historically covered high-reliability enterprise storage.

In the HDD segment, Western Digital competes directly with Seagate and Toshiba. In the NAND Flash and SSD segment, its competitors include Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron, and Kioxia. In 2023, the company announced plans to separate its HDD and Flash businesses into two independent publicly traded companies; as of my training data, that process was still under evaluation. Consumer HDD demand has faced prolonged softness, while data center demand has provided a partial offset.

Western Digital maintains an R&D center in Herzliya, Israel. The Israeli operation focuses on flash technology development, controller algorithms, and firmware engineering — capabilities that came to the company primarily through the SanDisk acquisition. Israel-based roles have historically centered on algorithm development, firmware, and storage architecture.
