BNP Paribas

BNP Paribas is a French multinational investment and retail bank formed in its current shape in 2000 through the merger of Banque Nationale de Paris and Paribas. The global headquarters is in Paris. The company is listed on Euronext Paris under the ticker BNP. The group operates in more than 60 countries and employs hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, making it one of the largest banks in Europe by total assets.

The group operates across three main divisions: Corporate & Institutional Banking (CIB), serving large corporations and financial institutions with trading, financing, and capital markets services; Commercial, Personal Banking & Services, serving retail customers and small and mid-sized businesses; and European retail banking networks including BNL in Italy and BGL BNP Paribas in Luxembourg. The bank is a significant player in derivatives trading, project finance, and M&A advisory.

BNP Paribas competes directly with Deutsche Bank, Société Générale, Barclays, and HSBC in European CIB. The group previously owned BancWest in the United States, and also acquired Exane in equities research. In 2023 it completed the sale of Bank of the West to BMO Financial Group, a divestiture that sharpened the group's strategic focus on Europe and its global CIB franchise.
