AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) was founded in 1969 and is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company trades on NASDAQ under the ticker AMD. AMD designs CPUs, GPUs, and related semiconductor products for the PC, enterprise computing, data center, and gaming markets.

AMD's product lines divide into two primary categories: CPUs under the Ryzen brand (consumer) and EPYC brand (servers and data centers), and GPUs under the Radeon brand (consumer graphics) and Instinct brand (AI and high-performance computing). AMD sells to OEMs, data center operators, major cloud providers including Microsoft and Meta, and to consumers through retail channels.

CPU products are built on the x86 architecture; GPU products use the RDNA architecture (gaming) and CDNA architecture (compute). AMD competes directly with Intel in CPUs and with NVIDIA in AI-focused GPU accelerators.

The EPYC server CPU line has achieved broad adoption among major cloud providers. The Ryzen line targets laptops and desktops. In AI compute, AMD positions the Instinct accelerator family — including the MI300 series — as an alternative to NVIDIA's H100 and H200 cards. AMD acquired Xilinx in 2022 for approximately $49 billion, adding FPGAs and adaptive computing products to its portfolio.

AMD's primary competitors are Intel in CPUs and NVIDIA in GPUs and AI accelerators. AMD has gained meaningful server CPU market share from Intel in recent years with the EPYC line. NVIDIA dominates the AI accelerator market, and AMD is attempting to close the gap through the Instinct series and its ROCm open-source software platform. The Xilinx acquisition extended AMD into markets where Intel (via Altera) and Lattice Semiconductor are active.

AMD maintains an R&D presence in Israel, primarily in Herzliya. The Israeli operation is partly rooted in earlier acquisitions of Israeli companies. AMD recruits engineers in Israel for chip design, processor architecture, and software roles, and is an active employer in the Israeli high-tech market across VLSI and chip design disciplines.
