Riverbed Technology is a U.S.-based networking and WAN optimization company headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company is best known for its SteelHead product line, which accelerates wide-area network (WAN) traffic by reducing latency and bandwidth consumption between data centers and remote offices. Riverbed went public on NASDAQ under the ticker RVBD and was later taken private in 2016 after being acquired by a consortium that included Thoma Bravo and Teachers' Private Capital.

Riverbed's flagship product, SteelHead, is a WAN optimization appliance and software solution that uses data deduplication, compression, and protocol optimization to accelerate application delivery over wide-area networks. The primary buyers are enterprise IT and network operations teams in large organizations with distributed workforces or multi-site environments. Riverbed also expanded into network performance management with its SteelCentral product line, which provides visibility and analytics across network and application performance.
