The company originated as a state-owned enterprise and underwent partial privatization, with the Israeli government retaining a significant stake. Its corporate headquarters are in Tel Aviv.

ICL operates in the mining and chemicals sectors, focusing on potash, phosphates, and specialty chemicals.
