ExpressVPN was founded in 2009 by Peter Burchhardt and Dan Pomerantz and is registered in the British Virgin Islands. In September 2021, the company was acquired for approximately $936 million by Kape Technologies, a UK-based privacy company with a major R&D center in Israel. Following the acquisition, ExpressVPN operates as a subsidiary of Kape, which was taken private in 2023 by Teddy Sagi's Unikmind Holdings and delisted from the London Stock Exchange.

The company's primary product is a consumer Virtual Private Network (VPN) service sold via a B2C subscription model. ExpressVPN's technical infrastructure relies on Lightway, an open-source VPN protocol developed in-house, and "TrustedServer" technology, which uses RAM-only servers to prevent data persistence on hard drives.

The flagship product is the ExpressVPN application, available across desktop, mobile, and smart TV platforms. In 2022, the company launched Aircove, a physical Wi-Fi 6 hardware router with native ExpressVPN integration. The company also bundles ExpressVPN Keys, a password manager, directly into its core subscription plans.

ExpressVPN competes directly with NordVPN and ProtonVPN in the consumer privacy sector. Within the broader Kape Technologies portfolio, it sits alongside sister VPN brands CyberGhost and Private Internet Access (PIA). ExpressVPN is positioned as the premium offering, maintaining higher monthly and annual subscription price points than its sibling brands.

ExpressVPN's connection to Israel operates strictly through its parent company, Kape Technologies. Kape maintains a large R&D and digital marketing hub in the Azrieli Center in Tel Aviv. Personnel in Israel handle engineering, product management, and user acquisition strategies across Kape's privacy brands, integrating ExpressVPN's growth engine. In early 2024, reports indicated that Kape executed a global layoff affecting approximately 200 employees, which included personnel at the Tel Aviv center.
