Chainalysis

Chainalysis was founded in 2014 by Michael Gronager and Jonathan Levin. The company is headquartered in New York and focuses on blockchain data analysis for law enforcement, regulatory compliance, and financial investigations. It is privately held and was last valued at $8.6 billion following a 2022 funding round led by GIC.

Chainalysis builds software that enables financial institutions, government agencies, and crypto exchanges to trace fund flows across public blockchain networks, identify illicit activity — including money laundering, terrorist financing, and DeFi platform exploits — and meet regulatory compliance requirements. Its publicly named customers include U.S. federal agencies such as the FBI and DEA, as well as banks and crypto exchanges. Sales are conducted primarily through direct enterprise sales.

The flagship product, Chainalysis Reactor, is a graphical investigation tool that allows visual tracing of fund flows between blockchain wallet addresses. A second product, Chainalysis KYT (Know Your Transaction), is aimed at exchanges and financial institutions for real-time transaction monitoring and AML compliance. The company also publishes an annual Crypto Crime Report, which has become a widely cited industry reference for data on crypto-related criminal activity.
